Past Awards of Interpretation and Education Fund Grants

2009 Awards

Beginning in 2009, we are providing access to the applications that received grants to provide National Trust Historic Sites further details on these projects. Although the Fund Committee typically supports the project as presented, it may adjust the award to fund some or different elements of a proposal. Those distinctions are made in the award letter and will not be apparent in a review of the original application.

  • $10,000 to Woodlawn/Pope-Leighey House for researching and developing interpretive resources for the mid-19th century history of Woodlawn and supporting a public program at Pope-Leighey House to interpret the site in an international context.
  • $9,000 to Cliveden [application attachment] to assemble a panel of nationally-recognized scholars and specialists to develop a plan to interpret the Site’s African American history through the Chew family papers.
  • $7,000 to Chesterwood to support two summer internships to enhance the interpretation of the Contemporary Sculpture Show and Daniel Chester French’s studio, as well as purchase graphic design software to produce educational materials.
  • $1,840 to Belle Grove to reproduce and enlarge seven historic images from James Taylor’s sketchbooks for exhibition during tours and events.
  • $5,000 to Drayton Hall [application attachment] to support the second year of its teacher engagement program, which includes a four-day recertification workshop with scholars.
  • $10,000 to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum for the planning and development of a revised neighborhood walking tour to increase capacity and include interpretation of additional immigrant communities for the period of 1935 to the present day in consultation with a team of scholars.
  • $3,900 to Lyndhurst for the design and production of station signs and a printed guide to accompany an audio tour presented on cell phone, as well as audio translations in Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Japanese.
  • $8,500 to James Madison’s Montpelier to support expanding the interpretation of African American history, including travel to conduct research on Paul Jennings, equipment to record oral histories, and a Jennings family reunion.

2008 Awards

  • $1,000 to the Robie House to purchase materials for on-site workshops.
  • $2,150 to Shadows on the Teche to design and install new interpretive materials for tours.
  • $5,000 to the Hotel de Paris Museum to identify target audiences and a marketing strategy in partnership with nearby historic sites.
  • $9,500 to the African Meeting House & Abiel Smith School for a project to involve middle-school students in the interpretation of the Black History Trail using wireless technology.
  • $10,000 to the Wilson House to develop an audio tour using cell phones of the surrounding Embassy Row neighborhood.
  • $10,000 to Drayton Hall to develop programs to engage school teachers and their students.
  • $10,000 to Montpelier to revise the existing audio tour to incorporate new scholarship and changes as a result of the restoration of the mansion.

The Fund also provided Training Scholarships to the following staff members at National Trust Historic Sites:

  • $600 to Jim Bert of the Hotel de Paris Museum to attend the AASLH workshop on historic house museum management and operations.
  • $1000 to Beth Taylor of Montpelier to study innovative interpretive techniques at historic sites in England and the Netherlands.
  • $1000 to the Frederick C. Robie House to support Cheryl Bachand’s travel/event expenses at the 12th annual Conference on Historic Preservation at Salve Regina College in Newport, RI, in Oct. 2008.
  • $970 to Belle Grove to support travel/event expenses related to educator Craig Orndorff attending the AASLH annual meeting in 2008.
  • $1000 to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio to support educator Jan Keickhefer’s travel/event expenses at the National Art Educators Association annual conference in April 2009.
  • $781 to Drayton Hall to support travel/event expenses for Rikki Davenport to attend the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies annual conference in 2008.
  • $957 to Decatur House to support Katherine Malone-France’s travel/event expenses to attend the National Preservation Conference in October 2008.

2007 Awards

  • $2,513 to Chesterwood for a series of three public lectures by scholars on artists and architects who collaborated or associated with Daniel Chester French.
  • $6,625 to Lyndhurst for a consultant to assess the interpretive methods used in guided tours and recommend materials and equipment.
  • $8,735 to Montpelier to convene a workshop with nine scholars to review the interpretive themes and methodologies for the mansion tours.
  • $9,900 to Decatur House to interpret the adjacent Lafayette Square using self-guided audio tours using cell phones in an 18-month pilot project.
  • $5,975 to Shadows-on-the-Teche for producing a videotaped tour that provides access to the second floor of the house to visitors with limited mobility.
  • $10,000 to the Tenement Museum for a consultant to create a pilot Web site on the immigrant and migrant communuties of the Lower East Side with a searchable database and interactive map.
  • $5,000 to Wilson House to produce a brochure on the core interpretive messages that visitors can take home at the end of a tour.
  • $1,000 to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $999 to the Oatlands to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $1,000 to the Cooper Molera Adobe to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $900 to Shadows on the Teche to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $1,000 to Filoli to develop a native cultures thematic framework.
  • $939 to the Drayton Hall to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $672 to Cliveden to attend the AASLH annual meeting.
  • $650 to Belle Grove to purchase a digital camera and accessories.

2006 Awards

  • $5,500 for the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio to revise and update their volunteer training materials.
  • $5,055 for Shadows on the Teche to create a heritage education package for school teachers that meets statewide guidelines.
  • $7,000 for Cliveden to create a neighborhood walking tour with historical themes and multiple perspectives.
  • $10,000 for Woodrow Wilson House to produce an exhibit on Woodrow Wilson that will travel to five venues.
  • $9,940 for Decatur House to complete the second phase of an in-depth survey and evaluation of its audience.
  • $655 to the Robie House for the Junior Interpreter Program training materials.
  • $975 to Shadows-on-the-Teche for a teachers’ training workshop on steamboats and trains.
  • $997 to Wilson House for the purchase of a digital projector.
  • $740 to Lyndhurst to purchase educational materials for the Gilded Age school program.
  • $1000 to Montpelier to install interpretive signs for the agricultural complex.
  • $1000 to Chesterwood to replace directional signs to the Site.
  • $1000 to Cooper-Molera Adobe to purchase educational materials for the 4th grade school program.
  • $1000 to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio to attend the AASLH workshop on visitor research as part of the performance management program.
  • $1000 to Cliveden to develop a prototype design of an exhibit as part of the master plan for refurnishing the house.

2005 Awards

  • $2,620 to Belle Grove for the research on women at Belle Grove Plantation, 1783-1836.
  • $10,000 to the Tenement Museum for their Interactive Online Tenement Museum Experience.
  • $5,185 to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio for the “Architecture and History” school program.
  • $4,000 for the second phase of the Web site development for Woodrow Wilson House.
  • $9,000 to Cliveden to revise their Web site.
  • $5,100 to Touro Synagogue for interpreter training to implement a comprehensive walking tour program.
  • $9,000 to Decatur House to design and conduct visitor evaluation.

2004 Awards

  • $4,000 to Montpelier to publish an interpretive and educational booklet written by several historians showcasing a recently-found drawing by Montpelier’s builder, James Dinsmore
  • $4,300 to Drayton Hall to create an education and information room in the museum store and to install a site-orientation map outside
  • $5,000 to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum to create a walking tour of the neighborhood that is developed by the neighborhood’s various constituencies
  • $5,000 to the Museum of Afro-American History to redesign and expand its Web site
  • $2,500 to Touro Synagogue for a self-study and evaluation of its public interpretive program using consultants experienced in American religious history, historic site interpretation, and heritage tourism.
  • $2,250 to Shadows-on-the-Teche to renovate its Web site
  • $7,500 to Woodrow Wilson House to redesign its Web site
  • $1,500 to Belle Grove to complete an oral history video production of former residents
  • $3,125 to Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and Frederick C. Robie House to conduct a comparative geodemographic analysis of visitors at two historic sites.
  • $900 to Woodrow Wilson House to install a temporary exhibit on the presidential campaigns of the 1910s and the World War I peace negotiations.
  • $950 to Cliveden to promote the Cliveden Institute’s spring 2005 program on the history of public memory and its affect on the interpretation of historic sites.
  • $855 to Woodlawn to purchase about two dozen books on historical interpretation and museum education for its staff reference library.
